Whacky Photo: Enchanting Kawasan Falls, Badian

Badian
First of the multi-level (series of) Kawasan Falls, Badian has.

Badian, Cebu houses the most famous Kawasan Falls, a series of water drop. The multi-level Kawasan Falls is also considered the most popular tourist destination in the province. It is located about 97.6 km southwest of Cebu City.

Mt. Manaphag a.k.a Pan de Azucar
The Iloilo-Guimaras trip was about to reach a big finish but we couldn't let it pass without getting a good look of Pan de Azucar. Plus, I still have an unfinished business with Sandbar Island Beach Resort as I have not gotten any peak of the bed of corals. We were still hopeful though, hoping that there's something good in store for us before we head home to Cebu. So, off we go to location # 2.1 before we finally give this trip a close.

Isla Manoc: The chicken-less island

on a pinhole.
We were all prepping up to get into beach bum mode when Ate Jennifer [local] approached us and told us to try going to this remote island between Cebu and Masbate. I was about to check with my friends if they want to go but before I can say another word, I saw very big affirming smiles. So off we go to Isla Manoc [later found out what the correct name of the island is as we heard her saying 'Isla Lamanok'].

Up until now, I'm still not sure whether the island is called 'Manoc' or 'Manoc-manoc'. I'm having difficulties finding an online reference that would put the confusion to rest. What I know is that it's between Masbate and Cebu. One thing remains sure, we heard Ate Jocelyn [local] wrong. We thought the island was called 'Lamanok Island'. Fail.
.....
So we popped into one of smaller outrigger boats primarily used for fishing and off we go to Isla Manoc [Manoc Island]. Ate Jocelyn was kind enough to make these arrangements with her neighbor.

Isla Manoc is composed of 2 islands connected by a shallow sand bar. According to the boatman,  the name came from the islands' figure. From a far, it looks like 2 chickens facing each other. He said, one is the cock [not the cock you're thinking, perv!] and the other, the hen. Another version also talked about hearing chicken crows in the island on midnight. ~Eerie. Note, the island is has no permanent residents due to the scarcity of fresh water so I don't think you can find any chicken roaming, scratching for food.

The islands are located in the Visayan sea, in between Masbate and Cebu. It serves as a temporary shelter for tired fishermen and migratory birds. It's around 45 minutes from Carnaza. The ride's a bit rough but I think it's because we were on a small boat.

The cock.

Interesting enough, one side of the island has rough waves crashing the sandbar while the other has calm and nearly steady waters. The sand isn't very fine. It's composed of broken down corals. So walking barefooted could become a bit challenging. [Learned it the hard way.]

We simmer the hours and the sun's heat with glimmering sounds  of laughter and awe. We grilled the 2 kilos of fish we bought earlier that day, snorkeled like our first time and swam like kids on a kiddie pool. Saying we had fun is an understatement.

Around 1:00PM, we decided to go to another island, Isla De Gato. I'm not sure how much time it'll take for us to get to the island. I was out to charge myself for another set of fooling around. On the way, we passed by the other side of the island. We were amazed with the rock formation and white sand shorelines tucked in between. I saw a spot with a long stretch of shoreline and suddenly thought of just stopping by to explore the area. Unanimously, we decided to just spend the rest of the day there.

Pit Stop.
It turned out to be a very good decision as we were able to harvest bags of edible sea urchins locally known as swaki.

4:00PM. We decided  to go back to base camp to witness the sunset. Off went our boat with restless spirits still bagging with us our fresh catch.

Ended the day with a spectacular view of the sunset over a cliff beside our base camp. It was like orange, yellow, blue and violet ink was splashed across the sky.

Whacky Thoughts:
Sometimes, taking sound decisions together or by majority can yield unexpected good results. It's best to take everyone's choice into consideration as a sign of respect of individual diversity. Just as long as everyone stands by one decision, nothing can go wrong. [I hope. :D] \m/

Budget Breakdown:
Island Hopping. Boat Rental - 800.00
2 kilos of fish for lunch - 160.00
Afternoon snacks (swaki) - Free!
Entrance Fee - Free!

Carnaza Island: a series of unplanned events.

The Plan.
It took me about two weeks [or more] to make a full-on itinerary for the trip. I even prepared printed copies as guides. (Talk about being OC, yes?) The ground plan had to be detailed because everything should go by the schedule.

There's no room for errors. Everything has to go as planned. Our destination doesn't have any resources readily available - no stores, no restrooms, no electricity. The plan? Get to Kalanggaman Island and back to Cebu in one piece by hook or by crook.

The Dilemma.
A few days before our island getaway, we're met with the deal breaker.

Our contact for the transportation had a slight change of mind and decided to increase the fee from 5K pesos to 10K pesos! That would raise the budget more than what we planned. 'Bummer', I said.

But nothing's gonna stop us. [insert inspiring climactic audio here]. We have to go.

The Plan B.
With so little time left, it seems like our destination, Kalanggaman Island, is slowly drifting away. But we are all determined to go. We agree to cancel the reservation with our contact,  go to the port to find a boat that's going to take us to Kalanggaman Island, and haggle the cheapest fare 'til our last breath. If all else fail, we'd go to a nearby island - Carnaza.

The Day.
Saturday came. It's difficult to contain the excitement. Being a corporate slave, specifically a callboy, this vacation is something I look forward to all week.

Knocked-off from the office at around 9:00AM and rendezvous with the gang at Cebu North Bus Terminal. Original plan was to take the 10:00AM bus trip so as to reach the port by 2:00PM. That would give us enough time to find a boat and haggle our way to Kalanggaman Island.

Waiting.
Time check: 10:00AM.
Only 5 of us itching to board the bus; 2 of our friends are still on their way.  The environment became hostile. Our energy level is starting to dwindle. The waiting is slowly killing the hype. Luckily, we know how to cheer each other up with below-the-belt kind of jokes; the kind that seems offensive to other people but not to friends.

Time check: 11:00AM.
An hour pass, they're nowhere in sight. The bus is starting roll out of the parkway. We look at each other with desperation. Small talks no longer work. We're still waiting, like watching a  It was like waiting  Called them up and found out that their cab pulled over by a traffic police for a violation. My tummy growled, my heart sank.

Finally, after..[i lost track of time then] waiting, the gals arrived. We were so ready to lash out but we still need to catch the bus. Hurriedly we boarded the bus with enthusiasm and excitement. Booyeah! Timecheck: 12:30PM.

The bus rolled out of the terminal. Jokes here and there about how clumsy they were, how hungry we are and how stingy we look since we never got time to fix ourselves considering we just got off from work. It will take us another 4 hours to get to Tapilon. Enough for us to take some rest amidst the bumpy road.

The Crossroad.
Time check: 4:30PM. We finally arrived in Tapilon Port. Everyone was smiling ear to ear with excitement. But first, we need to find a boat to Kalanggaman. Luck was not on our side then as there wasn't any boat available going there at that time. 'Think quick.', I huddled the team. Unanimously, we decided to go to Carnaza Island.

Boarded the last trip; supplies on hand and hearts eager to go on this adventure. To start with, we don't even know where the island is. We decided to just wing it and rely on man's inner goodness. Turning back was not an option. We just needed to keep moving forward.

And it turned out to be one of my best adventures to date.

So what happened next? Find out here: Discovering Carnaza Island, Cebu

Whacky Thoughts:
Sometimes, taking small conscious risks can lead to unexpected turn of events that may or may not be favorable. Yes, it can be scary but as long as you stick with the principles of travelling and maintain a positive outlook, everything will come your way [eventually. lol] I'm glad we weren't able to get to Kalanggaman Island [yet.]. I'm glad we decided to go the alternative instead.   Because what happened was far more magical than what we originally bargained for.
